Girona expects 16% larger apple crop

Thu 02/09/2021 by Richard Wilkinson

The producers of the Protected Geographical Indication (PGI) Poma de Girona predict a harvest of 84,580 tons this year, 16% more than in the previous season. The favourable growing conditions explain the hopes for a good season. These mild temperatures and relatively dry periods of the last few months will also allow higher quality, greater sizes, more colour and higher levels of sweetness. Poma de Girona is made up of 78 families of producers from the Girona Fruits companies, from Bordils (Gironès); Giropoma Costa Brava, from Ullà (Baix Empordà), and Fructícola Empordà, from Sant Pere Pescador (Alt Empordà).

If the forecasts are achieved, Poma de Girona will have one of the best apple harvests in recent years. The 84,580 ton forecast represents a considerable increase compared to last year’s volume of 72,680 tons.
