Spaniards’ have increased their consumption of organic products by 19 times in the last 20 years. Spain’s Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food, Luis Planas, has described the development of Spain’s organic sector as “spectacular”, despite covid-19 and the war in Ukraine.
The latest data available for 2022 indicates that Spain is second only to France in terms of the area dedicated to organic production, with 2.67 million hectares (+1.5% from 2021). Spain is the third European country, after France and Italy, in terms of the number of operators in the organic sector (60,621), and is the world’s second largest exporter of organic foods, only surpassed by Italy.
Planas was speaking at the sixth meeting of the group of experts “Ecological Ambassadors”, which on this occasion focused on promoting knowledge of organic foods among consumers so they can distinguish them by the Green Leaf logo.
