Bumper harvest expected for Spanish broccoli

Thanks to the abundant rainfall this year, Spain’s 2018/2019 broccoli campaign is set to see an increase of between 10 and 30%. For the season, which begins in November, Javier Bernabéu, secretary of +Brócoli, said, “We expect an abundance of broccoli and optimum prices for growers and consumers in the first months. However, there may be a shortage of broccoli in the following winter and spring months. In those months, there will probably be a reduction in the acreage, because the price of the vegetable last year was bad during this period.” The rainfall recorded in recent months has ensured that there is sufficient water for the entire season and that there will be no periods of drought until at least the summer of 2019.

Broccoli consumption in Spain has climbed steadily in recent years and is one of the country’s flagship crops. Over 90% of Spanish production is for export, particularly to Germany, the UK, France, the Netherlands and Italy, as well as to new markets, such as Saudi Arabia and the UAE.
