The PGI Poma de Girona continues to find new export markets in Israel, Sri Lanka, Canada, the Middle East and Latin American. Of the 80,000 tons produced each year, between 25% and 30% is exported. The three companies that constitute the PGI (Giropoma Costa Brava, Frutícola Empordà and Girona Fruits) were all at Fruit Logistica in Berlin last week to raise awareness of the Girona product abroad. According to the president of Poma de Girona, Llorenç Frigola, interest in the Girona product has increased by 10% this year and countries such as India are showing interest in future imports. However, Frigola says that the apple needs to be more present in the Spanish market, too since 50% of all apples consumed in Spain come from foreign countries, mainly from northern Italy and France.

The three Girona companies traveled to Berlin under the Catalunya brand accompanied by ten other Catalan companies in the apple sector. The visit was organised by the Department of Agriculture of the Generalitat through the public company PRODECA.

Poma de Girona is a Protected Geographical Indication (PGI). PGI Poma de Girona has 79 production partners representing a total of 1,700 productive hectares distributed between the regions of Baix Empordà, Alt Empordà, La Selva and Gironès. Poma de Girona cultivates five varieties including Gala, Golden, Fuji, Red Delicious and Granny Smith. The proximity of the Mediterranean Sea and the Pyrenees provide the perfect climate for producing the fruit. Poma de Girona is globally recognised as a quality, safe, reliable and sustainable product. The producers are highly qualified fruit growers who use integrated production techniques that are respectful of the environment, responsible and sustainable. They also perform strict quality controls and implement traceability systems.
