Regional supermarkets dominate in Spain

Spain’s grocery retail landscape is unlike that of other European countries, with a very regional flavour. Local chains dominate in certain provinces, such as Alimerka in Asturias, Dinosol in the Canary Islands, Gadisa in Galicia, Lupa/Semark in Cantabria and Eroski in the Basque Country, Navarra and the Balearic Islands.

Mercadona remains the national leader, with profits up 5%. The supermarket  is the main retailer in Andalusia, Castilla-La Mancha, Catalonia, the Valencian Community, the Community of Madrid and the region of Murcia, according to Retail data.

Among the differential features in the proposal of the regional chains, the main one is their commitment to proximity to the consumer, which is not only reflected in the presence of establishments in the urban centres, but also their differential attention and service. They also offer local and quality products.
