Chilean mandarin production to rise

All citrus categories are set to experience a drop in world production due to adverse weather events and the increase in input costs, according to a recent USDA report. In the case of Chile, mandarin production is projected to increase by 67,000 tons, up to 237,000 tons, thanks to favourable weather after last year’s frosts and the increase in harvested area. A rebound in consumption and exports is expected thanks to the increase in available supply. The US is set to remain the main export market.

Meanwhile, neighbouring Peru’s mandarin production is expected to drop by 20,000 tons, to 550,000 tons, as a result of rising labour costs, the high cost of fertilisers, and irregular weather conditions.
