On 14 July, Zespri and Dole signed a strategic cooperation agreement in Shanghai, making Dole Zespri’s official distribution partner in China. The move is intended to support mutual development in this lucrative market.

Michael Jiang, general manager of Zespri Greater China, said, “We believe that Dole will provide a strong impetus for the sales growth of Zespri kiwifruits in China market and help Zespri to deepen our market structure.”

Demand among New Zealand producers to produce SunGold kiwifruit continues to surge. Farmers Weekly reports that once again, the annual offering of 700ha of new licences for producing SunGold was oversubscribed, with bids totalling 1,660ha, reflecting the ongoing optimism among growers about SunGold’s value and prospects. At NZ$400,000/ha, SunGold is the most valuable fruit license, with the next being Envy apples at around $100,000/ha. Licence income has now become an integral part of Zespri’s non-fruit earnings, accounting for $211 million, or 6% of company revenue.

Zespri’s European kiwifruit harvest is again expected to deliver strong returns for growers in Italy and France, along with another great tasting crop for consumers around the world to enjoy.

Sheila McCann-Morrison, Zespri’s Chief International Production Officer, says that with the Northern Hemisphere harvest well underway, Zespri is expecting to harvest around 19 million trays or almost 70 tonnes of kiwifruit from orchards throughout Italy, France and Greece.

The first charter vessel carrying Zespri SunGold Kiwifruit is heading to China and Japan following this season’s early start to harvest.

The Southampton Star departed from Tauranga Harbour yesterday evening carrying approximately 3,000 pallets of Bay of Plenty-grown SunGold Kiwifruit bound for Shanghai and Kobe. The vessel had earlier berthed in Gisborne where it picked up 1,600 pallets of SunGold Kiwifruit, marking the start of what promises to be another bumper crop.

By the end of 2019, Zespri expects to present the market with its first variety of red kiwi. At the same time, the New Zealand company is preparing another green variety with a sweeter taste. Moreover, the company is considering using eco-friendly packaging to eliminate plastics and waste.

Zespri’s 2019 production in New Zealand is expected to be higher than the 150 million trays produced last year (+25% on 2017). The firm expects 10 million more trays of SunGold, although the green kiwi is expected to decline slightly.

At the start of April, the first New Zealand kiwis of the season arrived in China, where demand for the fruit is booming. Indeed, Zespri expects record sales in the country to the tune of €294 million when the financial year ends in June and predicts a doubling over the next four years. Jumbo-sized kiwis weighing 150g can fetch up to €1.90 in China’s premium outlets.
