Hinojosa optimises environmental management with FSC Multisite certificate

Hinojosa has become one of a select few Spanish companies to achieve the FSC Multisite certificate, the result of a significant effort in transparency and environmental management for the entire group. This certificate endorses in a unified way the sustainable origin of the paper that it uses in its plants. The certification guarantees customers that all of the group’s plants meet the same requirements.

The purpose of the FSC Multisite certificate is for companies with different production sites to have a single traceability management system for the origin of their raw materials. In this way, synergies between the different plants are exploited, administrative procedures are unified and simplified, and costs are minimised by having centralized management of these processes. Thus, instead of having a certificate for each of the group’s plants, from now on there will be only two, one for the packaging factories and the other for the paper factories.

This remarkable feat has been achieved during the current lockdown, which has meant an extra effort for both the certifier and Hinojosa. In fact, for example, most of the audits have been carried out electronically.

More and more brands are transferring to Hinojosa the need to guarantee the sustainable origin of their packaging. Despite the fact that most of the group’s plants already had this certificate individually, from now on internal control is increased, the traceability of raw materials is improved, and it is also endorsed for customers, that all the factories of the group have the same level of environmental demand.

FSC’s vision is for the world’s forests to meet the social, ecological and economic needs and rights of present generations without compromising those of future ones.

Tray sealing specialist Proseal has launched a revolutionary tray positioning system – the first of its kind – that calculates the required tray-spacing set-up parameters for individual tray sealing tool-sets, eliminating the trial and error usually associated with this process. The new patent-pending ProPosition™ feature automatically identifies the best position for trays, to ensure the perfect alignment every time. Its advanced technology provides food manufacturers and processors with a simple one-step tool-set-up, and removes the time consuming and potentially wasteful process of running test trays through the tray sealer to ascertain the best position. Instead operators are guided through the set-up via easy to follow animated instructions on the machine’s touch screen.

The system then permanently saves the relevant parameters for each tool, which greatly speeds up product changeovers and avoids operator errors during set-up.

ProPosition is fitted as standard to all new Proseal GT platform machines. Additionally, as part of Proseal’s ongoing strategy of futureproofing its equipment, the software can be retrofitted to any pre-existing machines which have the suffix GTe and GTs.

From 25 to 28 November 2020, the DLG (Deutsche Landwirtschafts-Gesellschaft – German Agricultural Society) will organise the Food Industry Technology Show Korea together with South Korea’s leading trade fair company Coex. The premiere of the new platform for food technology, processing and packaging will take place at the Coex Center in Seoul, South Korea. The new trade fair and conference format focuses on developments and offers international food technology and its relevance for the markets in Northern and Eastern Asia. Together with the parallel Coex Food Week, the established meeting place for the global food & beverage producers and dealers, the trade fair represents the entire value-added chain.

The Italian Institute of Packaging is promoting a series of training sessions on 29-30 July 2020 on the main legislation in force on the Asian market covering food contact materials and articles. The series of sessions begins with an overview of the legislation in Asian countries and on future trends. This will be followed by a detailed session focusing in depth on four countries: India, Japan, China and Korea.

There will be an extensive examination of the themes of greatest interest for regulatory affairs of each state: regulatory framework, individual substrate regulation (plastic, elastomers, metals, coatings, inks, adhesives), new substance approval process, supply chain and certification requirements. Each session will conclude with a debate on the themes expounded and will leave extensive space for questions and answers from the participants.

The two days will close with a final session in which the speakers will delineate a comparison between the four nations examined during the seminar, underlining similarities and differences.

A complete packing line solution from Ishida Europe has enabled an entrepreneurial French company to automate and bring in-house the packing of its dehydrated fruit and vegetable snacks, with the ability to increase throughput six-fold.

23rd June 2020 – Il Était Un Fruit, based in Montpellier, was founded in 2014 by Laure Vidal, who wanted to ensure her children were able to eat the required five portions of fruit and vegetables each day.  She devised a means of drying seasonal fruits from the region, such as apples, pears, strawberries and apricots.  In 2016, the company raised €1.2m to support its commercial development, including investment in equipment to industrialise the process.  Further investment is planned for 2020. In addition, in 2019 the product offering was diversified with the introduction of dried sliced vegetables, including a special Apéritif range.

Il Était Un Fruit’s products are sold in a variety of bag sizes for the retail sector – 10, 15, 30, 50 and 80g – as well as 1 and 2kg bags for specialist retail companies.  With the many different fruit and vegetable varieties, this equates to around 40 different product lines, requiring a fast and flexible weighing and bagging solution.

Initially the company contracted out its packing operation but when the decision was made to take it in-house, Ishida was selected for its ability to provide a complete solution for which it had total responsibility, as well as the company’s reputation for accurate weighing and reliable after-sales service.

The Ishida designed line comprises a 14 head CCW-RV multihead weigher mounted directly over an Astro 103S vertical bagmaker, which provides a compact and space-efficient combination, together with a DACS-GN-SE-012 checkweigher with integrated CEIA metal detector.

The RV-214 weigher incorporates a special C4 coating which prevents product sticking to the contact parts.  This ensures a consistent flow of the dried fruit and vegetables throughout the weigher.  Thirteen of the weighing heads are dedicated to the main ingredient, such as apple, while a small quantity of a second, high value item, for example fig, is manually fed into the fourteenth head and weighed. Once this individual ingredient has been weighed, the weigher combines it with the main product, delivering accuracy to within 0.02g of the target weight.

The intermittent motion Astro bagmaker features servo motors and software controlled variable seal time, jaw temperature and pressure to ensure a high level of precision.  Stripping plates clear the seal area before sealing which ensures good pack quality and servo driven and vacuum assisted pull down belts enable accurate and consistent bag lengths to maximise film use and optimise pack presentation.  
Nitrogen gas flushing is used to support the preservation and freshness of products that are naturally susceptible to air (oxygen) degrading the product, giving an ambient shelf life of around six to ten months depending on the product.

The weigher and bagmaker combination is currently running at 30 bags per minute on a 30g pack, well within its top speed of 70 packs per minute.

The DACS checkweigher and integrated metal detector provides a final quality and weight check.  Rejected packs are directed into two separate containers, depending on whether they are non-compliant in terms of weight or contain foreign bodies.
The checkweigher features an intuitive and robust display with an easy to learn menu structure that ensures quick and easy set up and is fully compliant with the European directive on measuring instruments.  

The checkweigher’s open frame design ensures easy cleaning and maintenance, including a complete washdown of the line every week.

“We are pleased with our investment,” comments Nicolas Rey, industrial director at Il Était Un Fruit. “The various machines have all lived up to their expectation, while Ishida’s after-sales service is quick to react if there is a problem. We are currently producing one million bags a year but are confident we can continue to grow because the line can cope with up to six million bags a year.”

Il Était Un Fruit has developed a special technique for the drying of fruit and vegetables with no added sugar, additives or preservatives.  The fruit is sourced from eco-responsible orchards and organic fruit and vegetables are Ecocert certified.  95% of the fruit and vegetables are supplied by local growers in the Occitanie region.

The products are washed in water, disinfected, peeled, diced and then dried using a patented drying method developed in partnership with the CIRAD (French Agricultural Research Centre for International Development).  

The new Apéritif range has been developed in association with leading French chef Gérard Cabiron, recipient of the prestigious Meilleur Ouvrier de France.

Enrico Aureli’s successor at the helm of the Italian packaging machinery manufacturers’ association for the two-year period 2020-2022 will be elected during the Annual Members’ Meeting in July.
He will be succeeded by Riccardo Cavanna as chairman for the two-year period 2022-2024.

Baggiovara, 18 June 2020 – Following consultations with member companies, the Designation Committee of Ucima (Italian Automatic Packaging Machinery Manufacturers’ Union) has opted for an arrangement in which two business leaders will take turns as Chairman during the four-year period 2020-2024. Matteo Gentili, Chairman of TMC (Tissue Machinery Company), has been designated as the new Chairman for the two-year period 2020-2022. He will be succeeded by Riccardo Cavanna, CEO of Cavanna Packaging Group, for the two-year period 2022-2024.

The vice chairmen will be Riccardo Cavanna from Cavanna and Roberto Paltrinieri from Tetra Pak. Luciano Sottile from Goglio, a member of the Board of Directors and Vice Chairman for the four-year period 2016-2020, has been assigned responsibility for promotional and exhibition activities.

Gentili will be elected during the Annual Members’ Meeting in July and his agenda will be presented, thereby officially sealing the handover from current Chairman Enrico Aureli, CEO of Robopac and OCME.

The appointments were agreed during the Board of Directors’ meeting on 18 June, where it was decided that in order to give equal representation to the two candidates who both enjoyed strong support amongst members, they will each take turns as Chairmen during this term of office. This arrangement reflects the value of the programmes presented and will send out a message of cohesion and common purpose regarding the development goals of Ucima and the sector it represents.

“In recent years Ucima has acquired great international authority and credibility and has become the main point of reference for everyone working in our sector,” says Matteo Gentili. “We have developed new projects and expanded our services. I intend to continue in this direction by providing services and tools that are increasingly focused on supporting and growing our companies.”

Matteo Gentili, 58, is chairman of TMC (Tissue Machinery Company), a company based in Castel Guelfo (Bologna) that produces and markets automatic machines for the packaging and management of Tissue and Personal Care products. In 2018 the company joined the IMA Group.

The watermelon is a fruit with very specific characteristics that requires packaging designed to absorb any potential damage caused by its weight. The packaging must be stackable, and suitable for both long-distance transport and display at the point of sale. Smurfit Kappa has managed to combine these features in its latest revolutionary product, Goliath, a corrugated cardboard packaging solution for the fruit and vegetable sector. One million units have already been manufactured with 100% satisfaction from the customers who have tried them (zero claims have been filed for collapsed boxes). In this interview, Enrique Guillén, Regional Manager of Smurfit Kappa Alicante and Almeria, two plants 100% dedicated to the design and manufacture of packaging solutions for the agricultural industry, talks to us about this new box and the company’s commitment to innovation in this market.

How did Goliath come about?

Innovation is one of our main pillars. So when our customers in the sector asked us for an efficient solution, developed specifically to transport and store watermelons,  meeting a set of criteria that would ensure the products ‘arrival at the point of sale in perfect condition, our designers got to work to create an innovative package that would solve the producers’ dilemma at its source. That was the beginning of Goliath, a product developed at our Agri Experience Centre in Alicante, Europe’s unique centre devoted 100% to agricultural research, development and innovation, where efficient (and) sustainable designs are conceived.

What are its main features?

Thanks to its conical shape, Goliath is able to absorb any impact caused by the weight of the fruit. Its internal anchors allow for perfect stacking, thus improving loading efficiency; it optimises ventilation and preservation of the fruit; it is recyclable, renewable, and biodegradable to minimise the ecological footprint of our customers; and it strengthens the customer’s brand image by supporting any type of printing. Originally designed for watermelons, it is now being used successfully to package other fruit, such as melons, citrus fruit, and even bananas.

How has Goliath evolved?

Smurfit Kappa’s designers developed a new version of this solution, the so-called Goliath 2.0, which—thanks to its redesigned anchors—allows Goliath to be stacked according to different market formats, a development much appreciated by retailers, while also providing better ventilation. The advantages of this latest solution are being presented to new and prospective customers through webinars led by the Agri Experience Centre (AEC@smurfitkappa.com).

Goliath is also suitable for both long-distance transport and display at the point of sale.

That’s right. Thanks to its cone-shaped design that can support 20 kg. of product, Goliath is the ideal solution for exporting fruit, since—in addition to all the aforementioned advantages—it streamlines distribution, minimises unoccupied warehouse space, eliminates collapsed box claims, and reduces fall incidents to virtually zero, a very important point considering the unique characteristics of the watermelon. It also reinforces food safety and hygiene because cardboard transmits less bacterial contamination than other non-biodegradable material. Moreover, all of our agricultural plants in the Iberian Peninsula are certified with the BRC Global Standard for Food Safety.

Hinojosa and Lactips develop plastic-free packaging solutions for food

More and more people concerned about the environment avoid plastics in their purchases. However, this is not so easy when it comes to purchasing coffee, chocolate, cocoa powder or cookies. Their oleic characteristics make it essential that their containers, even when mostly cardboard or paper, have plastic part or even aluminium foil to act as a barrier and protect the product. To offer an alternative, Hinojosa has formed a partnership with French start-up Lactips and together they have developed an innovative, fully recyclable packaging that combines cardboard and a bioplastic made from a natural protein.

The bioplastic, developed and patented by Lactips, is made from a natural polymer, making it 100% organic, compostable and biodegradable in fresh water. In addition, it has the properties of technical plastics. Unlike other bioplastics, it provides a high oxygen barrier so food is preserved better and longer, and food waste is reduced. Another outstanding feature is that this material is heat-sealable, that is, it is incorporated in a laminate into Hinojosa’s recycled cardboard boxes by heat, thus avoiding the use of glues. In addition, it is an effective fat barrier, printable and soluble.

Thus, the collaboration of the two companies has allowed them to generate a new range of 100% plastic-free packaging, but with all the advantages of plastics. The collaboration is part of Hinojosa’s commitment to research for the development of 100% sustainable solutions that provide present and future responses to the needs of the food industry.

This new system, which has already been successfully tested, is also compostable after use, even with food scraps and can be thrown into organic matter containers. Likewise, it is accredited with labels such as Ecocert, EU Ecolabel, and the OK Compost HOME and Ok Biodegradable Water certifications, both from the TÜV Austria auditor.

Smurfit Kappa links its CO2 reduction target with the Science Based Target initiative

 

Smurfit Kappa has advanced one step further along its sustainability path with the signing of a commitment to link its CO2 target with the Science Based Target initiative (SBT) goals based on scientific knowledge. The move that comes after the leader in corrugated paper and packaging revealed in its 2019 Sustainable Development Report that it had cut its CO2 emissions by nearly a third since 2005.

SBT is the fruit of a collaboration between the United Nations Global Compact, WWF, CPD and World Resources Institute (WRI) and sets goals based on scientific knowledge as an effective way to boost the competitive advantage of companies transitioning to a low carbon economy. The initiative focuses on validating CO2 reduction targets in line with those of the Paris Agreement, signed in 2015, which aims to limit global warming to below two degrees Celsius by mid-century.

Tony Smurfit, CEO of the Group, said, “We have a long-term commitment to improving the planet and being part of the solution to the problem of climate change. SBT validation will also make our ambition to be the most sustainable company in the paper-based packaging industry even greater.”

Steven Stoffer, Vice President of Development at Smurfit Kappa, said, “We have spent more than a decade dedicated to lowering CO2 emissions; so signing a letter of commitment with the SBT is the logical next step and further proof of the Smurfit Kappa’s role in minimising the risks of climate change. Although we have made considerable progress in our goal of limiting the impact of climate change, we aspire to further reduce our CO2 emissions, targeting a 40% reduction by 2030, taking 2005 as a benchmark. ”

Smurfit Kappa also supports the recommendations of the Climate Financial Disclosure Task Force, a global body that makes disclosures about financial risks related to climate change and that are used to inform investors, lenders and insurers.

Oliplast: the new bioplastic packaging material from olive waste

 

AIMPLAS, the Spanish plastics technology centre, and OLIPE, a cooperative of olive oil producers, have implemented the GO-OLIVA project to find a high value-added application for this waste by producing a new packaging material for oil packaging items. The result is Oliplast, a plastic compound material made with materials from renewable sources, namely, a filler or reinforcement from olive oil and a thermoplastic material. AIMPLAS also says that the new product is biodegradable and compostable. Oliplast can be processed by extrusion and injection moulding to manufacture new products such as trays and plates to hold bottles, as well as caps for packaging containers for cosmetic creams made with olive oil.

Work done to date has involved selecting raw materials and developing an olive stone that can be used to obtain the new material. The next step will be to perform a behavioural study so the material can be validated for transformation processes. Finally, an environmental study will be carried out to determine the material’s compostability.
