PRESS RELEASE

A challenging season for overseas shipments but with good results: +21% in volume and more than 100 containers shipped. Good performance of both brands Sweeki and Made in Blu

By March the last containers of Italian kiwis will be shipped by Origine Group to overseas markets. This season was definitely challenging due to the reduction in volume and sizes of the Italian green kiwi, and to the very strong turbulence on the logistics front, but which has nevertheless seen a further development of the sales of the Italo-Chilean Consortium.

“The decrease in volume of the Italian green kiwi harvested in 2020, together with a growing global demand and a strong dollar, has led to a complex situation – says the Managing Director of Origine Group, Alessandro Zampagna – On the one hand we gave priority to established business partners leaving out non-strategic sales, on the other hand prices went up but competition with the Greek product was particularly difficult, especially in the first part of the season.”

“Moreover, this year the logistical difficulties have multiplied, mainly due to the pandemic. Increases in fares, congested ports, last-minute changes and cancellations – continues Zampagna – in short, a very demanding season where we have done our best to ensure the arrival of the kiwi to our customers.” Nevertheless, overseas markets continued to provide satisfaction, with a 21% increase in the volume sold and well over 100 containers shipped. Sales were satisfactory on both the Far East and North America markets and for both the Sweeki and Made in Blu brands.

Although overseas shipments of Italian kiwis will end in a couple of weeks, sales continue in Europe, where demand remains good and the market interesting, in the prospect of a positive end to the season.  “We are already preparing the Chilean kiwi season, thanks to our partners Copefrut and David Del Curto, following the strategy of continuity of the branded product on the shelves all year round.” For the Chilean kiwi, demand is also on the rise, in line with the public appreciation of kiwi as a superfood, thanks to its exceptional nutritional content.

The top-quality brand of Origine Group for the first time in Walmart shops and online in China

Ferrara, Italy / June 17, 2020 – Over 400 Walmart China stores nationwide, as well as the chain’s online platforms, are currently promoting  kiwifruit belonging to the Sweeki brand of the Italo-Chilean produce consortium Origine Group. Customers can now purchase Sweeki kiwifruit through Walmart’s omnichannel.

Numerous Walmart stores will hold a wide array of promotional events in the next few weeks, including product samplings to let customers experience the unique taste of Sweeki kiwifruit in advance. Sweeki is the premium kiwifruit brand of the Origine Group, a consortium of nine Italian and Chilean fresh produce companies renowned for providing high-quality products to the global market. The total annual value of the fresh fruits and vegetables produced, packaged and traded by the companies comprising the consortium exceeds $1.2 billion.

The new partnership with Sweeki to stock fresh kiwifruit also covers both hemispheres, with fruit being grown in both Italy and Southern Chile to ensure an uninterrupted supply throughout the year. Given the collaboration with Sweeki, Walmart is able to employ simple and efficient procedures for harvesting and shipping, which will ensure freshness and quality while maintaining cost effectiveness, enabling Chinese customers to spend less while enjoying higher-quality kiwifruit via the Walmart China omnichannel.

Origine Group reports strong growth in Italian kiwi

The Origine Group has made exceptional progress with Italian kiwi this season. Despite the Covid-19 pandemic coming in the middle of the season, sales are up sharply.

“We have sold 3,300 tons of Italian kiwis on the foreign markets, with an increase of 49% on last season,” said Origine Group managing director, Alessandro Zampagna. “Our efforts to promote our quality products overseas and with targeted European clients have clearly been effective. Up to January the growth was mainly on the overseas markets, while in Europe volumes and prices were not picking up due to the strong competition. With the Coronavirus emergency, everything has changed: Europe has experienced a robust growth in demand and consequently in prices, whereas on the overseas markets we had to deal with a number of different problems, from port blockage to sudden market changes.”

Thus, Origine Group has overall enjoyed a hugely positive season. “We have increased the sales, opened new markets and placed our kiwis on new retail channels, all maintaining and interesting return for the growers, also thanks to our presence on different markets. Our top-quality brand “Sweeki” keeps growing in Asia, and now we hope to resume our projects in China. In North America we keep growing, while in Europe our clients trust our product and service,” said Zampagna – a positive outcome, therefore, in an unprecedented situation.

Now Origine Group is focused on marketing the quality kiwis of its Chileans members in order to ensure its brands’ all-year-round presence on retailers’ shelves.

Origine Group records 80% increase in sales of Italian kiwi

Origine Group records 80% increase in sales of Italian kiwi

“A satisfactory and successful Fruit Logistica”: that is the positive assessment of Alessandro Zampagna, managing director of Origine Group, the consortium of 9 leading Italian and Chilean companies.

“The absence of the Chinese and a few cancellations had no visible influence,” said Zampagna. “There were many visitors and all our meetings were confirmed.” There is growing interest in the activity of Origine Group, which promotes its members’ fruits in overseas markets.

“Despite the smaller Italian kiwi crop, our sales are going very well,” said Zampagna. “From October to the 31 December we shipped 80% more kiwis compared to the previous season, a trend that was confirmed in January. We have shipped more than 1,800 tons of Italian kiwis in the first half of the season, and we hope to go on until the end of March with these numbers.”

Particular success was recorded in the Americas, with Mexico opening to Italian kiwis this year, as well as in the Far East, although the Coronavirus has changed the situation somewhat in these markets.

“The Coronavirus has certainly had a terrible impact on the Chinese market, which is practically stuck, while other Asian markets have seen no negative impacts whatsoever. Fortunately, we have a limited stock in China and the containers afloat can be redirected if necessary. Nonetheless, we hope that it will be not necessary and that the situation in China will soon be back to normal,” said Zampagna.  In the Asian markets, Origine Group continues to market its high-quality brand Sweeki, which is present in China, Hong Kong, Taiwan, Singapore, Malaysia, Indonesia, and South Korea.

Origine Group exclusive italian partner of the pear “FRED®”

Origine Group exclusive italian partner of the pear “FRED®”

Origine Group and VariCom signed the licence agreement for the innovative pear FRED®

FRED® is the commercial name of pear variety “CH 201” bred after 18 years of work by the researchers of the Swiss Research Centre Agroscope. “FRED® has an attractive blush skin and handy size. The texture is firm, but crispy and juicy. Aromatic and sweet, backed-up by a light acidity in combination with an exceptional shelf-life, gives the consumer a fantastic eating experience – states Michael Weber, Managing Director of VariCom – Moreover, the tree shows a low susceptibility to Erwinia and has high yield. The cultivation of FRED® has been tested in several areas, and fruits will shortly be available for real-scale commercial tests.”

“Origine Group decided to invest in this pear – says the Managing Director Alessandro Zampagna – for its organoleptic and aesthetic characteristics, but also for its shelf-life and high yields. Therefore, FRED® is an interesting pear for all involved in the production and commercial chain, and we think that the pear sector needs new varieties with these characteristics. With VariCom and the French nursery Dalival, that will supply the plants, there has been an immediate understanding, and we trust this cooperation will bring very good results.”

“We are convinced that Origine Group, thanks to its production base and its strategy, represents the right partner in Italy, where it will be the exclusive producer of variety ‘CH 201’ and marketer of the brand FRED®. – continues Michael Weber – Italy is the first producing country of pears in Europe, so it will be crucial for the success of FRED®.”

“We hope to show some FRED® pears at Origine Group stand in Futurpera, the specialized exposition that will be held in Ferrara from 28 to 30 November” – concludes Alessandro Zampagna.

The kiwi Sweeki to conquest Madrid

Success for tastings in MercaMadrid and in the city centre of the Spanish capital

The balance of the first promotional activities for the kiwi Sweeki in MercaMadrid is very positive. Alessio Orlandi, general manager of ORIGINE GROUP, is satisfied: “We are planning activity promotions for other two weekends in the wholesale of the Spanish capital market. We will be set up dedicated desks to the new premium brand of our kiwi with tasting to discover the characteristics of this high quality Italian kiwi. The reactions of consumers after the first weekend have been interest and appreciation, supported by an extensive advertising campaign in and out MercaMadrid. The target of Sweeki is to be positioned in the premium segment where only high brix batches and rigid selection of fruits can stay. And tastings have confirmed it. “

Since last weekend the promotion also involved Frutería Gold Gourmet, in the prestigious Platea district (http://plateamadrid.com/), in the city center of the Spanish capital (this is the Frutería link: http: //plateamadrid.com/que-hay/gold-gourmet/).

Every Friday and Saturday in the wholesale market and in the store, are set up desks dedicated to the kiwi Sweeki with tasting to discover its features. Customers of Frutería Gold Gourmet particularly appreciated the sweetness of Sweeki, along with the refreshing and the high caliber taste.

“The final balance will be drawn at the end of promotions – concludes Orlandi – but we can already anticipate that the Spanish market, important for per capita consumption, is proving very receptive to our kiwi, whose quality is appreciated, along with the sweetness and the excellent quality / price ratio. We believe that we can grow up: the Spanish market for the kiwi is growing and the Spanish kiwi is covering only the 11% of the demand and 89% of kiwis are imported”.
