Americans spend $170m more on table grapes

Nielsen figures show that the grape category was worth $2.7 billion in retail sales in the United States in the 52 weeks to May 28 this year, a figure 6.7% higher – equal to  $169.6 million – than that for the same period a year ago.

Nielsen figures also show that the volume of fresh table grapes sold at retail also increased, rising 6.2% to a total of more than 1.21 billion pounds.

Indeed, there was not just growth in the overall grape category but in all subcategories, and in both volume and value.

Red grapes account for about half of America’s total spend on grapes and half the total grape volume sold at retail there. This sub-category grew 5.2% in value to $1.38 billion – boosting the total spend on grapes by $67.8 million – off a volume up 4.7% to 636.14 million pounds.

But it was white (green) grapes that made the biggest contribution to growth in the grape category in the last year in absolute terms. Though accounting for a smaller share of the overall grape category – 40.2% of the total volume and 41.2% of total value – white grapes generated 53% of the increase in spend (compared to 40% for red grapes), equivalent to more than $90.1 million.

Americans spent a total of nearly $1.12 billion at retail on white grapes over the year to May 28, which was 8.8% more than in the previous year. Similarly, the volume of white grapes sold was up 8.7%, to 489.2 million pounds.    

As for black (blue) grapes, the growth here was more modest, namely by 4% in value to $185.8 billion and by 3% in volume to 82.26 million pounds .

The ‘other’ subcategory saw the highest rate of growth in both value and volume at retail, shooting up 21.4% in spend to $19.56 million and 10.3% in volume to 6.7 million pounds.

And the ‘mixed’ subcategory logged the second highest growth rate, with a 14.5% upswing in value to $7.7 million and a solid 9.8% in volume to just over 3 million pounds.

Small rise in grape sales in UK

Thanks largely to shoppers buying them more often, retail sales of fresh table grapes in the UK are up 2.2% on last year to 227.9 million kg.

Kantar Worldpanel data also shows that the 5.5% rise in the frequency of grape purchases helped push up the grape spend to a total of £775.9 million for the 52 weeks to May 22. That total is 1.6% higher than the value of the grape market the previous year.

Red grapes

While there was a small increase in sales of grapes overall, sales of red grapes slipped, something Kantar Worldpanel attributed to decreasing penetration.  

Red grapes – which represent about 47% of both the total value and volume of the total grape market in the UK – saw sales worth £362.8 million, a total 1% under that for the previous 52 weeks, on a volume down 2.8% to 108 million kg.

The average price of £3.36/kg was up 1.9% on that a year ago.

White grapes

A 3.2% decline in the volume of white grapes bought by shoppers per trip was a key factor in the 2.5% decline in the white grape spend to £269.3 million. The volume, 82.4 million kg, was practically unchanged, growing just 0.1% on the previous year.

White grapes accounted for more than a third of all grapes sold at retail in the UK and boast a 63.3% market penetration rate, compared to 59.6% for red grapes, 37.5% for mixed grapes and 27% for black grapes. The average price for white grapes was up 1.9% to £3.27/kg.

Mixed grapes

The mixed grape market was worth £84.2 million, having grown 17.7% on last year. In volume terms, it was up 27.3% to 20.4 million kg. Kantar Worldpanel said this growth was driven by new shoppers entering the market.

The average price for mixed grapes was £4.12/kg, which was higher than the prices for red, white or black grapes alone but down 7.5% on the average price for mixed grapes a year ago.

Black grapes

Thanks to new shoppers entering the black grape market – the penetration rate rose 15.9% – the black grape market enjoyed a 20.9% increase in spend to a total of £58.7 million and the total sales volume grew 25.1% to 16.9 million kg. However, the average price of £3.48/kg was 3.3% lower than that of the previous year.

Fresh table grapes: world demand and production estimates

In its latest report on world markets and trades for deciduous fruit, the FAS also said global trade in fresh table grapes is likely to remain steady at about 2.7 million tons in the 2015/16 marketing year, though both Peru and China are poised to increase their shares.

Global consumption of fresh table grapes is set to rise for the 6th consecutive year, going from just over 15.6 million tons in 2009/10 to an expected 20.9 million tons in 2015/16, amounting to growth of nearly 34%.

China, India, the EU, Turkey and Brazil are the top 5 consumer markets.

Production
Meanwhile, world table grape production is also headed up, by 479,000 tons to 21.1 million in 2015/16, as continued growth in China more than offsets declines in Turkey, according to new projections by the USDA Foreign Agricultural Service (FAS).

In its latest report on world markets and trades for deciduous fruit, the FAS also said global trade in fresh table grapes is likely to remain steady at about 2.7 million tons in the 2015/16 marketing year.

Both Peru and China are increasing their shares.

China: is the world’s biggest fresh table grape grower and consumer, accounting for about 46% of both global production and consumption.

China’s production is forecast to jump 800,000 tons to 9.6 million on higher area in 2015/16 and its exports to surge 35,000 tons to 165,000 as lower prices and good quality fruit boost exports to neighboring Asian markets. Imports into China are expected to rise 24,000 tons to 250,000 on higher shipments from top suppliers Chile and Peru.

Chile: the top table grape exporter, with a 27% share of the global market, Chile faces a slight contraction in production to 925,000 tons on continued low yields following last year’s March floods and July snow, which affected orchards in the north.

Before the bad frost of 2013/14, Chile’s production had been above the million ton mark. Its 2015/16 exports are forecast down 10,000 tons to 740,000 on lower exportable supplies.

United States: production is forecast up 29,000 tons to 984,000 on higher yield in California despite drought being a concern for many growers. Exports are forecast to remain flat at 390,000 tons on unchanging demand from top markets Canada and Mexico. Imports are forecast to slip 7,000 tons to 540,000 on lower availability from top supplier Chile, the FAS says.

Peru: production is forecast to rise a modest 10,000 tons to 510,000 as new plantings, driven by strong foreign demand, continue to come into production. Exports are forecast to rise 15,000 tons to 295,000 as market share continues to expand in top markets China and the EU. Peru ranks third after Chile and the US for fresh table grape exports, holding an 11% slice of the world market.

Turkey: is the world’s third biggest fresh table grape grower (and ranks fourth as a consumer) but production is forecast to drop 345,000 tons to 2 million tons as the main growing region of Western Turkey was hit by a spring frost. Exports are forecast to drop 78,000 tons to 179,000 on lower output and reduced shipments to top market Russia, where a ban on certain Turkish imports goes into effect January 1, 2016.

EU: imports into the EU, the world’s number one fresh table grape import market, are projected down slightly to 600,000 tons on stable demand and higher domestic production.

EU production is forecast up 49,000 tons to 1.7 million on increased output in Spain. Despite the Russian ban, exports are expected to remain stable at 105,000 tons on sustained exports to new markets in North Africa and the Middle East.

Russia: imports are forecast to fall 51,000 tons to 250,000 as consumer purchasing power continues to fall, consumption declines, and shipments from Turkey are reduced following Russia’s ban. Russia’s production is forecast down 9,300 tons to 90,000 on reductions in both commercial and household production.
