This summer, DEL MONTE EUROPE is bringing the passion back to the fans with its “Fruitball” Cup!

Monaco, June 27, 2020 – In a year where many sports events have been canceled, to the deepest regrets of fans, Del Monte Europe is aiming to reignite the passion by launching its own “Del Monte Fruitball Cup 2020”. The interactive competition will take place on Del Monte Europe Facebook and Instagram pages, and the fans of the most delicious fresh and preserved fruits as well as sport amateurs will be able to join the fun.

“We are very excited to launch this fun competition, as we believe that despite the difficult situation of Covid-19 pandemic people are looking for small occasions to smile and entertain themselves” said Thierry Montange, Marketing Director Europe & Africa. The campaign will consist of a friendly competition between European nations where the brand features social media’s fans pages. The Del Monte “fruitball” players and characters will be “fruitfully” recognizable as some of Del Monte Europe’s range of products. Each follower will be able to defend its own nation during the games up until the final, and some exciting prizes will be rewarded to the most enthusiastic and creative fans, including a special reward for some amateur football club in need of support.

The campaign will kick off on Saturday 27th June 2020, and this date was not chosen randomly as it is actually International Pineapple Day. “We picked this particular date in order to leverage this celebration which is very important for us as a worldwide leader in fresh produce pineapple. It was natural to kick off this campaign by spreading the word of Del Monte pineapple’s many benefits for sports aficionados and for other people as well”, continued Montange. Fans should not miss the start of the campaign on Saturday 27th, where pineapple theme gifts will be awarded to some lucky participants on Del Monte Europe Facebook and Instagram Channels.

Vietnam imports US$150 million of fresh fruits and vegetables every month, with shipments soaring from the US and Australia. This influx has led to exotic fruits becoming less pricy and fuelling further demand. The General Department of Vietnam Customs reports that the main sources were the US and Australia with imports rising over the past ten months by almost 70%. Shipments of fruits from South Africa rocketed by 39%, while those from New Zealand were up 38%, those from China climbed 36% and those from Chile increased 21%.

The volume of fresh blueberries imported from the US by air has reached 350 tons this year. In the face of the larger supplies, prices have tumbled, with the average price per kilo of blueberries falling 40% since last year and Australian Navel orange prices plummeting 35%

The prices of other exotic fruits have seen similar patterns, such as New Zealand’s kiwis and apples, US grapes, Australian mandarins and South African pears.

“We have partner farmers and packing houses in various regions of Thailand, which is why we can ensure an almost year-round supply of fruit,” said Pakpum Bhagpabhakorn, director of PP Fruit, who participated in the China FVF expo in Beijing this year.

He explained that the longan season is from June to September in the north of the country, and from November to February in the east. The mangosteens are exported from April to September, while the durian is also available for 6 -7 months a year.

“Fruit from Thailand is highly appreciated all over the world,” Bhagpabhakorn said. “In the first place, our climate is very favourable for exotic fruit production. Also, we have been introducing modern technology and our farmers are very experienced. No wonder, then, that Thai fruit exports keep growing year in, year out.”

PP Fruit is part of the Thai fruit traders and exporters’ association, which promotes their premium fruit internationally. “Fruit export is our main business. We have long-term relationships with our clients from Hong Kong, Indonesia and other Asian countries; we began to export to China six years ago,” he said.
