New green category in ‘Mercabarna Innova’ awards

Companies interested in participating in the 2016 ‘Mercabarna Innova’ awards may submit their projects from May 2 until August 31.

A new category focused on ‘green’ products is being added to the ‘Mercabarna Innova’ awards this year.

As Barcelona’s wholesale food hub, Mercabarna is holding what will be the second edition of the awards as a way to recognise innovation by companies within the complex.

The first category in the ‘Mercabarna Innova’ awards recognises innovation in the creation of new products, formats, packaging and food safety. Projects related to new business models, mobility, sustainability and innovation in customer services will also be accepted. The winner in this category will receive a prize of €6,000 and the runner-up €4,000.

The winner of the new, second category focusing on the development of green products will receive €6,000.

Companies interested in participating may submit their projects from May 2 until August 31, Mercabarna said in a press release.

It said the awards will be judged by a prestigious panel comprised of renowned professionals and experts in the food industry who will take into account criteria such as originality, sustainability and the extent of implementation in the market.

The panel members are Enric Ezquerra, Chairman of the Catalan Association of Distributors and Supermarkets; Jaume Llopis, Professor at IESE Business School; Josep Maria Monfort, Director of Research and Technology, Food and Agriculture (IRTA); Lourdes Reig, Vice-rector of International Relations at the Polytechnic University of Catalonia; and Toni Valls, Director General of Alimentaria Exhibitions.

Organisers say that in 2014, the competition (open to exhibitors only) drew over 1,700 applicants – up 70% on the previous edition. “SIAL Innovation is an unmissable chance to increase visibility and kick-start networking with over 156 000 international food world players,” the SIAL Paris press team said in a media release.

There are 15 SIAL (Salon International de l’Alimentation) Innovation awards and entry is free.

Visitors discover trail blazing products

“Every single one of the 160,000 visitors expected at SIAL Paris…knows that this show will give them precious insight into the products and trends of the future. If 76% of professionals say they have discovered innovations here in the past, it’s because 78% of the exhibitors use this biennial event as an unveiling platform for their R&D team’s newest products.

“The companies present in SIAL’s Innovation area (which is frequented by around 75% of the show’s visitors) see a large return on investment when their products win awards. It should therefore come as no surprise that 80% of 2014’s successful candidates are entering the competition again this year.”

Gateway to the big league

French Cooker says SIAL Paris may seem overwhelming, “but you’ve got to go! It was a fantastic experience for us – one that got us into our target market and made us ‘big league’ players. You do need to keep a ‘cool head’ though, and keep an eye on both supermarket orders (as the amounts can be significant) and potential labelling issues with export.”

Mercabarna rewards innovation with new awards

With its new annual “Mercabarna Innova” awards, Barcelona’s wholesale food complex seeks to promote innovation among the 700 food and agriculture SMEs on its premises.

Mercabarna has launched a programme of annual awards to encourage the creation of innovative projects by the companies in its Alimentary Unit.

Barcelona’s wholesale food complex thus aims to reward innovation in diverse areas, such as the development of new products, formats and packaging, the use of new technology, and the search for more sustainable processes. In the words of Mercabarna CEO Josep Tejedo, “innovation is the engine for constant improvement on order to adapt to the changing needs and tastes of consumers, and is a key factor for competing in the current market.” 

The first ‘Mercabarna Innova’ awards were presented on November 25 and recognised  the work of the Fruit Friends and Laumont companies, whose entries were a dehydrated fruit bar and a mushroom app for chefs, respectively.

The first prize of €6,000 went to Fruit Friends for its Born GO bars, which Mercabarna said were the first on the market to be made entirely out of fruit.

It said the product is healthy, tasty and easy to eat, and makes for the ideal snack between meals or while doing physical activity.

Meanwhile, the second prize of €4,000 was for an app developed by Laumont, a company that specialises in the mushroom and truffle trade.

Called Naturchef, the app is designed to keep restaurateurs and chefs informed about product availability, making menu planning easier.

A first class jury

Formed by experts and representatives from the university, business, administration and research worlds, the jury chose the two winners from seven projects entered. The most highly valued aspects were how much of an improvement had been made in relation to product quality, processes and customer service.

From a field of 60 applications, ten products have been singled out as contenders for the Fruit Logistica Innovation Award (FLIA) for 2016.

Hailing from Belgium, Netherlands, Spain, Denmark, South Africa, France, Israel and Germany, their innovations will be showcased at Fruit Logistica – being held February 3-5 – in a special exhibition area between Halls 20 and 21 of Berlin ExpoCenter City. Visitors to the show will be able to cast their vote there for the Innovation of the Year. It’s also where the winner will be announced on February 5 at 2.30pm.

A panel of experts representing every segment of the industry selected the following ten candidates:

“Automato”Stoffels, Belgium: A dispenser for the point of sale: different cherry tomato varieties are dispensed from three boxes directly into paper bags

“Enjoya”Terra Natura International, Netherlands: Unique: a yellow and red striped sweet pepper.

“Harvest Automation”Hortiplan, Netherlands: A machine for the fully automated harvesting of salad varieties.

“Kitchen Minis® Tomato”Northern Greens, Denmark: A cherry tomato plant for the windowsill, yielding up to 150 tomatoes.

“Outspan Sam”Capespan, South Africa: An initiative for children, including videos showing the journey citrus fruit takes on its way to the dinner table.

“Parmentine’s Cup”Parmentine, France: A container with 250g of baby potatoes to be cooked in the microwave. Available in two varieties: with basil and tomato or fresh cheese and chive sauces.

“Pearl Herbs”2BFresh, Israel: Ideal for garnishing dishes: tiny fresh herbs in ten varieties

“QualyCheck” HortKinetix, Germany: An app that can generate and send a quality control report from a smartphone.

Entries open for 2016 Gulfood awards

Gathering 5,000 food and beverage exhibitors from over 120 countries, the Gulfood show is billed as one of the world’s most important annual food and hospitality shows and an unrivalled chance to source and select from an incredible global product showcase.

Entries close on January 29 for the Gulfood Awards, which are designed to celebrate excellence and innovation across every category of the global food industry.
Now in their seventh successful year, the awards are being held as part of the Gulfood show, taking place at the iconic Dubai World Trade Centre (DWTC) from Sunday February 21 to Thursday February 25, 2016.

Safeguarding the UAE’s food security

The show venue, the Dubai World Trade Centre, is within the business hub of Dubai, the city which is itself a hospitality, trade and tourism hub for the Middle East. A majority of UAE imports are traded through Dubai, its biggest city.
And according to UAE Minister of Economy Sultan Al Mansouri, food imports into the UAE – which buys in 85% of its food – are poised to rise from $100 billion (Dh367 billion) in 2014 to $400 billion in the next decade. Due to the lack of arable lands in the UAE, the government plans to develop farmland in other countries to help to secure food supplies amid increasing demand and it is also urging diversification of the sources of imported food so as to hedge against any crisis.
The UAE has already invested in agro-food initiatives in Namibia, South Africa and in several Arab countries including, Tunisia, Morocco, Algeria, Sudan and Egypt, Al Mansouri said.
Within the wider Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) – consisting of Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, and the United Arab Emirates – food consumption is expected to grow at a CAGR of 3.5% between 2014-2019 to reach 51.9 million tons by 2019 and food retail in the GCC is forecast to be worth $155 billion by 2018.

Israel’s Aurora Seedless Papaya wins Fruit Logistica 2015 Innovation Award

Trade visitors at last week’s Fruit Logistica fair in Berlin chose the “Aurora Seedless Papaya” as winner of the Fruit Logistica 2015 Innovation Award (FLIA). It was selected out of a field of 10 finalists, all of which were on display at the event.


From Aviv Flowers Packing House Ltd. in Israel, “Aurora Seedless Papaya” has a delicate fragrance and firm, full-flavoured pulp. The product of natural selection and crossing, its target markets include the EU,, Switzerland and Canada.



The second place FLIA winner was the “Lemoncherry” tomato.

Developed by BelOrta, a growers’ cooperative based in Belgium, this yellow, sweet-tasting cherry vine tomato features a distinctive, lemony aroma.

Third place honours went to the “DIY Fresh Packs” produced by Bakker Barendrecht (part of the UNIVEG Group) in the Netherlands.


These products are designed for consumers who want to use fresh ingredients to prepare a full meal, soup or side dish for four people.


Fruit Logistica’s showcase of fresh product ideas

Fruit Logistica global brand manager Gérald Lamusse described the ten finalists for the award as “outstanding new fruit and vegetable industry products and services that are driving new trends in the international marketplace.”

The other finalists were :

  • “Eye-Catcher” – A product display system for crates at the POS, from Cabka Group GmbH, Germany;

  • “FC 15 Fruit Chunker” – A cutting machine for pineapple and melons, from Atlas Pacific Engineering, Inc., USA;

  • “Holzdekor-RPC” – Reusable plastic crates with a natural wood look from Polymer Logistics, Germany;

  • “Low Carbon rPETeCo” – Packaging material consisting of 90% recycled plastic bottles, from Holfeld Plastics Ltd, Ireland;

  • “Portable Nondestructive Fruit Quality Meter” – A portable quality-control measuring device, from Sunforest Co. Ltd., South Korea;

  • “Regal’in™ Apple” – A new apple variety, from Regal’in Europe, France;

  • “UP-8000” – A peeling machine for carrots, cucumbers, white radishes and other long vegetables, from Hepro GmbH, Germany.

Lamusse said the award is “the industry’s most coveted distinction” and attracts huge international media attention.
