The rise of China’s avocado sector
Known as “butter fruit” due to its creamy flesh, avocados are being produced in every greater volumes across China. The main production area is Menglian county in Yunnan province, where avocado cultivation commenced in 2014, and now totals 15,000 tons per year. The area’s farmers previously specialised in commodities like rubber, tea and sugar cane. Menglian’s tropical climate resembles that of the world’s main avocado-producing areas.
