Despite adverse growing conditions caused by El Niño in early 2017, Peru’s grape output is expected to rise in MY 2017 as new plantings come into production and maturing vines produce higher yields. Thanks to its dry coastal conditions combined with its implementation of precision drip irrigation systems, Peru’s grape producers are able to mature their vines 55% faster than their South American neighbours.

The 2017 season got off to a difficult start for Peru’s top agricultural export as weather conditions caused a delay in harvest, which led to a supply overlap with neighbouring Chile, putting downward pressure on prices. Peru’s main export market by far is the US (37%) followed some way behind the Netherlands (11%), Hong Kong (10%) and China (8%).
