Organics drive spread of vertical farming

Thu 16/09/2021 by Richard Wilkinson

Demand for vertical farming is increasing rapidly, owing to rise in popularity of organic food. Indeed, the global vertical farming market is expected to be worth in excess of US$12.7 billion by 2026, which means 24.6% CAGR growth between 2019 and 2026, according to a report published by Allied market research.

The report highlights the benefits of the model, noting that vertical farming “facilitates huge quantity of nutritious and quality fresh food without relying on favourable weather, high water usage, skilled labour, and high soil fertility.” It is also becoming more prominent due to a reduction of construction activity and land use as well as technologies that enable precise crop monitoring.

However, a high initial investment is required for setting up the structure and necessary lighting as well as irrigation systems.
