In recent years, the dominance of the apple has been challenged with the rise of other types of fruit, such as grapes, small berries, kiwi fruit and more. In the UK, for the first time, grapes have overtaken the apple to become the best-selling fruit thanks largely to the growth of “snack packaging”. This packaging is very popular with grapes, but not so popular with ready-to-eat sliced apples because shelf life is short. Grape consumption for the past 12 months was 604 million GBP, while apple and banana consumption was 600 million GBP and 551 million GBP.
