German retailers strive to reduce plastic waste

Major German retailers are leading the way in attempts to reduce plastic consumption using innovative techniques. Lidl is currently trialing selling unwrapped fruits and vegetables. From the second quarter of this year, the discounter also plans to test organic tomato grass and sugar cane trays as packaging alternatives. For over six months, Lidl has been trying out packaging made of cellulosic networks of certified beech wood for organic potatoes and organic onions, as well as a cellulosic garden-compostable film for organic tomatoes and organic peppers.

Rewe has also started various initiatives to prevent plastic waste. Since last October, bananas have only been sold loose. In addition, the company is testing the labeling of organic avocados and organic sweet potatoes with laser logos to avoid unnecessary packaging.
