The European Commission has launched a public consultation on the EU’s future action plan for the development of EU organic production. The action plan will complement the new legal framework for Organic Agriculture (Regulation (EU) 2018/848) that will enter into force on January 1st, 2022.

The development of an action plan on organic agriculture stems from the EU Green Deal and the European Farm to Fork Strategy that have set an ambitious target of at least 25 per cent of EU agricultural land to be farmed organically by 2030. The action plan on organic production is intended to help consumers, farmers, business operators, national governments and local authorities to reach this target. The Commission aims for the action plan to drive investment and innovation in sustainable farming, respond to increased consumer interest in organic food, and boost demand for organic food.

The Commission is also looking at ways to minimise the EU’s contribution to deforestation and forest degradation worldwide as well as to promote the consumption of products from deforestation-free supply chains in the EU. The deadline for input is 12:00am Brussels Time on December 10, 2020.
