Despite logistical challenges, China’s banana imports from Ecuador have risen by over 25% in the first half of 2022 compared to the same period of the previous year. According to the Association of Banana Exporters of Ecuador (AEBE), China remains the main market in the Asia-Pacific region with a share of 63.75%.

In the first 6 months of 2022, China imported 6.9 million boxes of Ecuadorian bananas, which is 1.39 million more than during the same period in 2021. In Asia as a whole, imports were up by 30% to 10.83 million boxes.

Ecuador is currently negotiating a free trade agreement with China, which should lead to further growth in trade.
