Local production plays a major role in Spanish grocery retail, according to executive director of Carrefour Spain, Alexandre de Palmas. Writing in his ‘Flash Retail’ space on Linkedin where he proposes keys to success for the sector, de Palmas stated: “The sale of local products is, without a doubt, a critical point for distribution companies, since it meets customer demand, helps us improve the quality of our products, and is a commitment to the local economy and the agricultural sector. and, finally, it helps to reduce the carbon footprint of our activity.”

Carrefour has been committed to offering a wide range of local products for more than ten years, with a portfolio of more than 1,800 local suppliers.

“For Spaniards, buying local is synonymous with quality and freshness,” he said. “We also developed the concept of “ultralocal”. For example, we have 25 ‘Km 0’ tomato agreements with local suppliers. In Spain, 52% of households choose local products, ten points more than the European average, a trend that has been growing for years and that has been reinforced after the pandemic.”
