China’s growing taste for avocado has led to the first consignment of New Zealand avocado to arrive on its shores. In the first batch to arrive, 40 boxes, totalling 220 kg, arrived in Shanghai Pudong International Airport on February 2nd. Currently, the main exporters of avocados to China are Mexico, Chile and Peru. With the recently signed protocols, New Zealand becomes the fourth country to gain access to what will undoubtedly become a lucrative Chinese market. The Philippine avocado is also expected to be admitted in the coming months. In 2017, the total amount of avocado imported to China grew to 28,800 tons.
