Local markets feel the love in May
More than 3,000 markets across the globe are taking part in the 2018 Love your Local Market (LYLM) campaign, the biggest celebration of wholesale and retail markets. “Markets: close to your heart,” is this year’s slogan, one reflecting the proximity of markets in local communities and the personal contact they allow with traders and products. Being marked around the world during May, the LYLM campaign also aims to raise awareness of markets as the backbone of the food trade and one of the most dynamic parts of the cities and towns in which they are found. Special activities are planned in more than 30 countries in Europe, America and Asia to commemorate all that is great about them and the traders within. LYLM 2018 kicked off in Greece on Friday May 4 with a big party open to the public at the Central Market of Athens. Hosted by the Central Markets and Fishery Organisation (ΟΚΑΑ), it was a major success with a hundreds-strong turnout. Gastronomy events, street food and live music and art were among the attractions, with a concert by Eurovision 2005 winner Elena Paparizou a big crowd favourite. ΟΚΑΑ said such festivities strengthen links between markets, consumers and their local communities. They also help promote the general profile and role of retail and wholesale markets, bring small and big markets closer together, and raise awareness of high quality products from all over the country. On May 5, representatives from markets and national market associations within Europe, including Greece, the UK, France, Spain, Belgium, Hungary, Serbia, Portugal, Ireland and Poland gathered at an event at the Acropolis Museum, where they signed a World Union of Wholesale Markets (WUWM) Memorandum of Understanding and officially launched the campaign.
